Ingredients Needed:
- 1 to 3 ounces of cannabis
- Extraction tube
- 2 Butane Canisters
- Double Boiler or Electric Range
- Parchment Paper
- Razorblade
- Purging Kit
Cooking and preparation time: the entire process of making shatter is around 1 to 2 hours depending on what extraction method you chose. However, for this project, we’ll be using the BHO extraction method which is good for around 1 to 2 hours.
Steps on How to Make Shatter at Home

Step 1: Grind your cannabis until they are fine. In this way, cannabis is much easier to purge compared to ungrounded ones. it doesn’t necessarily mean that it should be in their powdered state, just tear them to bits. For making this, you could skip the grinder or blender, scissors is more than enough.
After they are turned into bits of pieces, let them settle and dry. If your cannabis bits are too fresh, the butane might have a hard time purging them.
Step 2: get your cannabis clippings and fill them in onto the extraction tube. You make sure that they are tight enough inside. We highly recommend avoiding any air pockets. Remember that we are dealing with butane here, highly flammable substance.
An ounce of cannabis bits is good enough for one extraction tube that yields a good amount of shatter.

Step 4: the next step is evaporating the butane. Evaporating the butane is a risky method. that’s why it is important to have an electric range rather than a gas range. Now, fill your double boiler or electric range and place the Pyrex on top of it. this process will start the evaporation process and evaporate butane from your shatter.
When doing this step, be sure to have your safety masks on, butane is dangerous to inhale. A double boiler will evaporate every butane.
Once the hash oil stops bubbling, the evaporation process is done!
Step 5: the next step is vacuum purging. This is best done in a well-ventilated area or your dirty kitchen outside. We recommend buying a vacuum purge kit in a reputable store.
