How To Make Hemp Soap

There are different ways to make your hemp soap. The most common and easiest way is to purchase an odorless soap and melt it down then infuse it with hemp seed oil and mold it into a new one. However, this would mean that the hemp extracts will not be as effective as it is not fully integrated within the soap itself.

It is always better to make hemp soap from scratch as you also get to understand how homemade soaps are made and how fun they can be as a side project. To start, you will need to gather the following equipment.

1. Gloves.
2. Goggles.
3. Measuring jug.
4. Saucepan.
5. Thermometer.
6. Whisk.
7. Wooden spoon.
8. Molds.

Note that this equipment is for your safety. Some of the ingredients needed to make soap can be very harmful and can cause long term damage to your body. You must protect yourself from any accidents and reduce the risk of causing any injury as you make the soap. Make sure that all the substances used in this procedure should be labeled properly and stored safely away from children. Most of the equipment used in this procedure must also be used solely for this process.

Now that you have gathered all the equipment, make sure to gather the following ingredients to make the hemp soap.

1. Hempseed oil.
2. Shea butter.
3. Coldwater.
4. Lye beads, caustic soda.
5. Coconut oil.
6. Virgin olive oil.
7. Vitamin E extract.
8. Fragrance and essential oils – optional.

To start, make sure that you are well protected by putting your gloves and goggles. Use the measuring jug and fill it up with cold water. Slowly add the lye into the mixture and make sure that it is well dissolved. As you slowly mix the lye into the water, you will notice that this will create heat. You can set the mixture aside in a cool place.

Gather your shea butter, hemp seed oil, and coconut oil into the saucepan and melt them together. In another saucepan, add the olive oil and vitamin E extract together. Once both mixtures are thoroughly dissolved and mixed, add them in a single saucepan and continuously stir. Check the temperature using your thermometer and if it has reached 100 C, you can turn off the heat.

Slowly add the lye mixture into the oil. Keep on stirring gently to thoroughly mix the solutions. Once it is mixed, slowly increase the speed of your mixture until the solution thickens. Carefully observe the mixture as it slowly becomes translucent and later on become opaque. This is the time where the oils and the water solution are thoroughly mixed together and cannot be separated.

To know that you have successfully whisked the solution, you can take a sample and let it drip back into the saucepan. If it somehow leaves a trace then the mixture is a success. If it does not, continue with mixing until you reach that point.

This is the time when you can add the fragrance and other essential oils into your mix and then mix it for a good while. Pour the mixture into the mold and let it cool down. Set it aside from a few days and make sure to check on them from time to time. It is best to leave them for a couple of weeks so the lye in the mixture is removed by that time.
